Why Steel Matters
The steel industry has a major impact on Pennsylvania’s economy, and the commonwealth is one of the largest steel states in the nation.
According to a 2018 economic impact study commissioned by the American Iron and Steel Institute, the Pennsylvania steel industry directly employs 34,124 workers who earn $3.14 billion in wages and salaries annually. This equates to an average annual salary of $92,037, while generating $22.45 billion in output.
The industry is an important source of tax revenue for the state, local and national economy. The industry provides more than $2.2 billion in state and local tax revenue, and more than $3.6 billion in federal tax revenue, for a total of $5.9 billion.
Study results show the Pennsylvania steel industry ranks among the top three in the country for direct jobs, output, wages and taxes paid.
